Volunteers Speak

Our volunteers form the backbone of our organization.  In Food from the Heart, these generous and kind individuals participate in the daily bread runs, come rain or shine; help out at fund-raising events and even provide administrative support in the office.

Currently, almost 3000 Volunteers are registered with FFTH and of these; over 400 have been with us from day one – a clear testament to their commitment and largesse.  Our youngest volunteer is 14 years old and our most experienced is 43 years old, Gatsby Koh with a volunteer Id –V0010. He was the first batch to sign up & he has been with us since February 2003.

Our volunteers are both committed and passionate about the cause.  These are some of the things that they have to say about FFTH.

“Being a FFTH volunteer has enlightened me as to how a charity organization is run. Helping others and especially the needy seems to be the primary factor of their goal. I am grateful to have chanced upon this opportunity and help out in any way I can. Helping out in Passionball 2007 early this year, made me realized how much effort is required to carry off a fund raising event. I feel a sense of gratification being a part of the FFTH’s league.” - Nur Salshabila

Since I joined the team, I eagerly look forward to my collection nights. Even on days where I have more than enough work piling up in the office, I am never tired for my night assignment. Why? In busy and bustling Singapore many have forgotten the less fortunate ones and probably also forgotten the little things in life that can bring happiness to others. I always had a dream to be rich so that I can help the needy. But now, I realize that in the absence of money, I can also help the less fortunate by offering my services in delivering and making friends during my rounds. I deliver bread to a half way house and look forward to my chit chat sessions with the bread shop aunties and also the people in the home. To the Home, we are their Hope and to me, they are my Angels as I can see how blessed I am. The happiness I get during these rounds is priceless. In most deliveries, my whole family comes along and my children understand that they are lucky kids and should be thankful for what they have and not take things for granted. FFTH, thanks for allowing me a chance to boost my self worth! - Tina Lee

Ever since I started volunteering with FFTH in 2005, I’ve never looked back. Helping out at various events such as FFTH's inaugural joint Flag Day and Bridging Hearts was an opportunity for me to see active volunteerism in action. Joining the volunteer pool has also shown me the less fortunate side of Singapore which exists in silence and un-noticed. Through the various events organized, volunteers and staff of FFTH have managed to bring smiles to many. Volunteering has never been so much fun! “Food from the Heart…with much passion and love!” - Muhd. Diniy

“Being FFTH volunteers, we feel very happy and satisfied when we see the joy on the recipients' faces when they receive the food parcels from us." - Packers from Marine Terrace Self Collection Centre

"It is very gratifying to move several kilograms of bread to the charity home every week. The smiles on the residents, nurses and staff that greet me each time never fails to cheer me up. There are people who are less fortunate than others, and these are the same people whose plight does not improve even when the economy is booming. The Bread Distribution Programme is a practical and tangible way of helping them." - Lee Chwan Ren

“I am happy to deliver bread to the welfare homes organized by Food from the Heart. It’s fulfilling and satisfying to deliver much bread to a few homes each day. I think it is fortunate that we have Food from the Heart organizing this type of charitable activities in Singapore. I will continue to deliver the bread as long as I can anytime when I am available. Cheers!!!” - Lester Mak

I have been a volunteer for the nightly food collection since FFTH started. I was doing the Kovan Mall route on Fridays. For 3 years it was Friday night bread collection without fail, then Delifrance closed down  ... We become "unemployed”... I was "lost" for a while... The weekly dose of "food FOR the Home" was not there anymore... I called Choi Har to give me some "jobs” to keep me occupied on Friday nights... Now, I'm back on R0268...

You know, actually as volunteers, the FFTH program provides us with the "food FOR the Heart”... The appreciation you get when you deliver the bread each night is food FOR our Hearts. We are filled with a great sense of giving to the less fortunate... The silent soldiers of FFTH marches on... Every night, every week, every month and every year. Keep it up guys... You’re doing a great job! - Yeo Kia Bong

Volunteering with Food from the Heart- you’ll definitely reap more than you sow.
- Marie Ng

I am very proud to be part of Food from the Heart. Even though Food from the Heart is not a huge organization like NKF, I am very happy volunteering myself and doing my bit for the community. My children also feel a sense of satisfaction, and by tagging along at every bread run, it has somehow managed to open their eyes to the other side of Singapore. - Faridah Ikhwan
